SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND!
The Urban Dictionary defines the name Diamond as follows…
“Strong woman who fears nothing or no one. She can get anybody or anything she wants. With a name like this, she has to stay on her P’s & Q’s. She is the baddest thing walking and dressing in the latest fashion is a must. She is sassy, sexy, classy and has a bit of an attitude, but she is a humble woman also. No other can top her. She is the real deal. She has a banging body with a good head on her shoulders. This woman is going places.”
When you combine Diamond with Lil, you have defined an Atlanta legend.
Diamond Lil began her career in Savannah as a gender bending performer in a time that was less than accepting of alternative identity. Numerous arrests and an exasperated and threatening judge contributed to a relocation
westward to Atlanta. The move proved to be the beginning of a mutually beneficial relationship
that would ultimately be historic. Diamond was a true original, paving the way for the thriving female impersonation community that currently exists in Atlanta today. Her groundbreaking efforts asserted an expectation of inclusion and recognition for an all too forgotten and maligned aspect of the general community.
Diamond embraced the opportunity, turning the status quo on its’ ear and establishing an identity among the greatest original performers Atlanta had ever seen.
Typically a drag performance embraces a persona and a repertoire that celebrates the contributions of a renowned star. Diamond was a star all her own, writing and performing original music and lyrics that embraced multiple genres of music.
A celebration of this amazing life occurred at the Spiritual Living Center of Atlanta. The event was hosted by the remarkable Reverend Dr. Joyce Rennolds and was a tribute to a life beyond compare.
2000 A.D. was honored to have been selected to provide the florals and décor for the celebration. Rich content combined with feathers, fur and bling created a stunning tribute for the divine diva.
So the next time you are treated with a clear constellation of heavenly proportion, look to the sky and smile as marabou feathers slowly descend to earth. Know that Diamond has simply changed her zip code, but will always live on and thrive as she did so well in life.
